Self Evaluation is an important aspect of continuous improvement and involves self-assessment; development-planning and target-setting; monitoring; reviews of progress in achieving plans and targets; sharing of good practice; external inspection. As part of governor's key role of accountability of standards, governors and schools need to be able to monitor and evaluate their own progress and take action to bring about improvement based on the results of their self-evaluation. Governors need to know how well the school is doing; how it compares with other schools, locally , and nationally, how the school compares with other similar schools; how does the schools current standards compare with previous years; are any groups of pupils performing better than others and what are the reasons behind this; are there any subject areas in the school which perform better than others and what are the causes for this. Governors and School need to be aware of the sources of evidence to support them in their judgements. Self Evaluation is a key tool in School Improvement and the Self Evaluation form plays a key role in the OFSTED process. In 2009, South Glos Governor Development Team will be offering a toolkit to governing bodies to help governors with Self Evaluation.
